Common descriptionRepublic of Singapore is the city-state located on the islands in Southeast Asia, separated from the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula by narrow Johor Strait. It shares borders with the Sultanate of Johor, which is part of Malaysia and Riau islands within Indonesia.
The first mention of Singapore appears in Chinese chronicles of III century. The island was a stronghold of the Srivijaya Empire, the center of Sumatra, and wore Javanese name Temasek. Temasek for some time been an important trading center, but later fell into decay. There is very little evidence about it except for some archaeological finds.
